Words From Our Founder
My passion for cooking started at a very young age. By the time I was 12, I was making Indian Street Food favourites and experimenting with different flavours. I was fortunate enough to learn some of the skills and techniques of the talented cooks I grew up around. No matter the cuisine, I was always present, watching everything, enthralled by the unlimited possibilities in the kitchen and making mental notes for when I would try to recreate the recipes later on. Don’t get me wrong, I love all types of food, but Indian food stole my heart. My family all have some sort of idea of what to do in the kitchen – whether it’s preparing a fine meal for the family, or sautéing leftovers for midnight toasties. Long story short, I have some great mentors. In 2019, during my final year of university, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in F&B. Not knowing where to start, I picked up some work experience and shortly after started my first venture – Heera’s Kitchen.
The word ”Heera” means diamond in Hindi; this was my Grandma’s nickname for me before she passed in 2010. She is the reason I decided to call the business “Heera’s kitchen”; it’s my way of honouring her life and the lessons she taught me. After a successful year of trading, I realised the only way I was able to expand was to convert the dark kitchen into a physical store. Once I saw the site, I knew it was a perfect match. Turning it from a computer store into a fully-fledged takeaway was far from easy, but worth it.
I decided to change the name to “Great Indian Food ”, as I want people from all over to know exactly who we are and what we do. I know that I still have my Grandma’s blessings as I strive to make her proud. Most importantly, I want to share my passion for cooking with you all. I know people say “seeing is believing”, but I strongly believe that “tasting is believing” – try my food and you will taste the difference. Khao, piyo, aish karo mitro! (eat, drink and enjoy yourself)
